The challenge

A growing estate and an ageing system

Wise Winery isn’t one building. The estate takes in the main winery and restaurant, a new shed with workers’ accommodation behind it, and Wise Winery House. More chalets are on the way.

The winery already had about 100 kW of solar, installed bit by bit between 2012 and 2015. It was getting old, and the ground-mounted array couldn’t get any bigger because the new cabins were going in right next to it. A backup generator only covered the restaurant.

What we did

A plan for every building

We started with a full site feasibility study. We mapped every switchboard, meter and existing system, then designed each site to suit how it actually uses power.

  • Main winery: We kept the existing network approval and replaced the old system with a bigger one: 88.35 kW of new panels (186 panels) on the existing ground-mount footings with a 50 kW SAJ CHS2 battery cabinet, plus a new 59.5 kW rooftop array (100 × Risen 595 W) with a 29.9 kW SAJ CHS2 battery cabinet and about 77 kWh of usable battery. Each cabinet sits next to its own inverter.
  • Back shed and workers’ accommodation: A new off-grid 83.3 kW solar system with a 50 kW SAJ CHS2 cabinet and 77.3 kWh of usable battery, with a manual changeover switch so the grid is still there as a backup. It also leaves room to power the new chalets later. Panels are JA Solar and Risen.
  • Wise Winery House: 27 kW of solar (57 × JA Solar 475 W panels), an SAJ H2 15 kW three-phase hybrid inverter and 50 kWh of SAJ B2 batteries (two 25 kWh stacks), set up to run off-grid with a manual changeover to the grid.

We managed the whole job from design through to installation, network paperwork and monitoring setup. We worked closely with our local install partners the whole way.

Electrical scope

  • Full site feasibility study mapping every switchboard, meter and existing system
  • Existing network approval retained at the main winery; old ~95 kW system removed and replaced
  • Manual changeover switches at the back shed and Wise Winery House so the grid remains as backup to off-grid systems
  • Connection of each CHS2 cabinet alongside its own inverter and into the site switchboards
  • Network paperwork and STC documentation; systems connected 25–29 April 2026

The results

What the estate is seeing

About 85%self-sufficient in August 2026, main winery site, from monitoring data
Off-gridthe shed and house systems are designed to run off-grid, with grid changeover as backup

Results are for this site and period, based on monitoring data. Every site is different, and your results will depend on your usage, tariff, roof, weather and system design.
